Happy Independence Day to our American friends.
Racing was on tap at 8am at David's for the last Formula 1 race for 2 weeks. The qualifying runs on Saturday set up some interesting matchups for today's race and it did not disappoint. Again, from Austria, we had Max Verstappen on pole by the barest of margins, and he is proving to definitely be the man to beat this season. A couple of years ago the petulance of the young Verstappen angered me but he is now a more mature and balanced driver. Again today he held the lead from start to finish with no challenges at all. All the fun was behind him as battles for positions raged on, and there were some rude moves, bumps and penalties assessed.
The strategy by the Ferrari team starting in the back half of the pack did not serve them well and they were in the thick of the jostling, especially my guy Charles LeClerc. Starting in the 10th (Sainz) and 12th (LeClerc) positions, they were skilful in finishing 5th and 8th respectively..
Former champion Lewis Hamilton scraped a kerb and damaged the underside of his car to make him struggle to hold his 4th position. Teammate Valtteri Bottas for Mercedes was faster today and moved from 5th to 2nd. The surprise of the day was Lando Norris, starting 2nd and finishing 3rd despite penalties for bumping other drivers off the track. Norris was Driver of the Day, and Verstappen had the Fastest Lap. A silly late crash between Raikkonnen and Vettel should not have happened between such veteran drivers... All in all, very exciting and competitive.
The race was in Austria, but you would never have known that by looking at the crowd. Seas of orange jerseys from Dutch fans obliterated the rest of the crowd! That is idol worship!
I picked up Cristina and we did a cemetery visit, quite lengthy today.
OK, Blogger has really pissed me off to the point that you are are lucky to be seeing today's pictures......... Every time I try to upload about 30 photos something stalls and then I am forced to try to upload them in packets which always seem to insist on uploading backwards which ruins the whole story. It is a day like this that makes me wonder why I bother putting up with all the frustration....... After about 18 tries I finally got them up for you with only a few backwards but not important.
I hope you enjoy the pictures. That was the day’s excitement.
