Wednesday March 30, 2022

The morning was all blue sky and sunny and boded well for the trip to our home town of Radville, Saskatchewan.  It stayed beautiful all day.

First, we had a late brunch at Roots in Regina because we did not want to arrive before lunchtime in Radville.  I had another nostalgia meal of eggs benedict that was simply superb there.

We made our way to Milestone for a quick rest stop and to pick up a couple of snacks before continuing on.  I continued to marvel at the complete flatness of this area, the amount of beautiful water in the fields and the many herds of pronghorn antelope we encountered.

We entered our home town and there is still so much exactly the same as in our childhood so we do feel at home again.  We cruised around most of the town trying to remember who lived where before heading west into the cemetery.  We stopped right next to Mom & Dad’s grave and paid our respects before moving around the whole place.  I took photos of several graves meaningful to me and to people we intend to visit.

We stopped to see old friend and cousin Jocelyne Doud to make arrangements for a mini class reunion tomorrow.  More on that tomorrow…

We stopped at brother Norm’s house but a doorbell and a knock raised no-one so we continued to tour the town before I phoned Norm to find out that he had been napping in the living room with Drew, one of his granddaughters.  Drew had not been feeling well so she was not in school today.

We went into Norm’s Man Cave (garage) where he has almost every toy and tool known to man, …most men’s dream place…  I got to play with the dog Josie while we enjoyed a brew to satisfy my need for doggie attention.

Before long Lana came home from school with Drew’s sisters Kenna and Marley, who were later retrieved by their Mom, Kristina.

Norm BBQ’d a large batch of homemade deer and pork sausage and they were superb, driving home the fact that I can’t find decent sausage in Colombia,  It is such a treat to enjoy these comfort foods on this trip.

In the evening we went to visit cousin Jeanne at her folks’ place that is now up for sale for $100,000 for anyone who may be interested.  We hadn’t planned to stay long but 3 hours went by pretty quickly as we solved all the world’s problems.

Thank you to Norm and Lana for having beds all ready for us…..

Son-of-a-gun!  After all these years I think that I have finally figured out how to make my photo uploads behave...!!!!

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.

Tuesday March 29, 2022

The day was windy and therefore really cold this morning as we went for a healthy breakfast at A&W.  Later we went to meet Maurice's friend Tina in her lovely home for lively conversation and travel discussion.

We left there and Maurice took me to the Saskatchewan Provincial Museum which I had not seen since 1967, and it was completely different.  I vividly remember that it once had a geology section which said that a large potash deposit was found at Radville but it was too deep to be commercially viable to recover.  Apparently that was removed about 8 years ago.  Now it is mainly animals and dinosaurs and very well done with piped-in sound effects.  Some exhibits showing that possibly elephants and rhinoceri roamed this area are a little far-fetched in my mind, but I took a lot of photos of the nice exhibits.

Then Maurice took me by the nearby Wascana Park and the Saskatchewan Legislature to see some Canada Geese but even they were mostly staying out of the cold wind.

I worked the rest of the afternoon on these photos and then had to stop to go for supper with Maurice and Tina at Montana's where we had a playful and witty waitress.  I had fish'n'chips again because I wasn't too hungry and we all had apple crisp with ice cream for dessert which was so sweet that I couldn't even finish it.  Thank you again Maurice and Tina for a lovely day.

We have made many plans for the coming days in Radville to meet family and classmates.  We also just got word that my Grade 12 teacher Ethel Carlson has passed away at age 91.  She was a delightful and well-respected teacher.   RIP Ethel.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  It took me over 30 minutes just to upload the 47 photos in stages and Google loves to annoy me by uploading 1/2 of those backwards, but it is not critical.  10 minutes was spent trying to get the last 7 uploaded in the right order.   Grrrrrr   That was the day’s excitement.
