Sunday December 6, 2020

We got to rub Charlie's nose again this morning, always happy to do that.  Then I had lengthy problems with internet connectivity again this morning so Movistar got another earful from me.

I napped and had leftover fried hamburger, potatoes and fresh buttered bread for lunch for a second day of delight.

It was good that I did, because going over to David's at noon when he hadn't asked what I wanted for lunch kinda told me there was none today.

We were there to watch the second last Formula 1 race of the season, again from the Middle East.  This year's champion, Lewis Hamilton is out with Covid-19 so George Russell was moved up from the McLaren team to Mercedes to take his spot.  Filling in at McLaren was the grandson of the great Emerson Fittipaldi.  Another new driver was filling in for Romain Grosjean who burned his hands badly in last week's fiery crash.

The race course was short, so there were 87 laps to make and it got off to a really bad start.  On the very first lap. my guy, Charles LeClerc of Ferrari, tried to steal the inside line on a corner, cutting off, and hitting Sergio Perez into a spin and crashing.  Max Verstappen also crashed just trying to avoid them.  Perez, a Mexican driver of the Canadian Racing Point team was now in 18th, and last place.  LeClerc, in his usual honest fashion, did not make excuses but took the blame for the crash.  That is why I like the kid.

Bottas and Russell for Mercedes had been 1-2 for much of the race but had disastrous stacked pit stops where they mixed up on the tires and actually had to put the old tires back on Bottas' car so he never got back to better than 8th.  Russell was forced to do an extra pit stop to change tires immediately again and ended way back in the pack, forcing him to fight his way back into the points and 9th place.  He was chosen Driver of the Day.

The big story was that, not only did no previous winner from this year hit the podium, but two Canadian Racing Point drivers did!  Yes, Perez came all the way from last place after one lap to take the lead away from a Renault and his partner, Canadian driver Lance Stroll!  Another Canadian, Nicolas Latifi, actually had a fastest lap during the race as well.  While the Racing Point team is Canadian, I was shocked to hear them play the British anthem for the car manufacturer... Boooo.

Anyway, as a Canadian, I am excited about the team and the drivers and wish them well.

Now there is a sad tale to add to this...  Lance Stroll is the owner's son, so he stays with Racing Point next year but will be joined by Sebastian Vettel who is coming over from Ferrari.  So, Sergio Perez, who has just has two spectacular races, back-to-back, is without a team for next year (so far)...!!!  That is sad.  He is much too good to leave on the sidelines or demote.

Oh, and Rolex must make a fortune off their watches, because the amount of advertising they do for F1 is incredible, and must cost a fortune.

It rankles me that the Racing Point team show Bombardier as one of their sponsors.  As a taxpayer who has been subsidizing Bombardier for years, it pisses me off that they have the money to advertise on Formula 1.  They don't build cars.....

David looked good today and is always so matter-of-fact about his health and condition.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.
