Trying to juggle money to live on between countries with uncooperative banks is always trying,.. very trying.
My 3-month CD at the local bank expired today so we went in to see if they had a 60-day CD option or not. This money was earmarked for me to take a trip, to Canada, Europe, or wherever. However,... we have spent almost every outside piece of income and it frightens me that we really have no emergency money here for a small disaster.
It also did not make economic sense to send more money from my Canadian account, (almost an equal amount of accumulated pension) when the exchange rate is so bad.... So the prudent decision was to just use what I have here, and the Canadian money is our emergency/travel fund for a while.
So the CD was cashed, after a 1/2 hour wait and another 1/2 hour at the teller. I worked at Scotiabank 51 years ago and we did everything by hand with mechanical calculators, etc. I swear that we could have done this simple job in less than 10 minutes. Part of the absolute stupidity is to have to enter your name, address, cedula #, etc, 3 blinking times on the same form... and it is not a tear-off form..!! Grrrrr. I hate useless bureaucracy.
We did a little shopping at Dollar stores and I tried to find a new fanny pack without success. So we stopped for lunch at PicaPiedra (Flintstones) and actually came across Cristina's cousins who live in Andalucia as well, Jorge and Omaira, a very nice couple.
Across from us was also the police investigator working for Cristina. He is seeing Adiela for her statement tomorrow.
We stopped at Adiela's to pick up a full-length mirror that I guess she donated to Cristina because Cris thinks the one in her vanity makes her look f*t... Even I look skinnier in it so I am not complaining either, lol.
One of today's purchases was a mercury thermometer to double-check my electronic one. You can see below that the electronic one, sitting a tad higher, showed the temp in the house at 4pm at 30.3C while the other one shows 28.5C. I always suspected my electronic one was out a couple of degrees and this seems to confirm my suspicion.
I also took my broken fanny pack to the shoemaker in the next block because the strap plastic fastener broke. For $2 he will replace it and I pick it up on Saturday. Some things are just great here...
I am sure that if I went to Canada and tried to buy groceries at Safeway that I would would hardly buy anything because of sticker-shock. In fact, I am certain of it.
We were supposed to have a repeat visitor (Luz) from Cuenca in a few days but I guess that is postponed because of a family emergency.
I hope you enjoy the pictures. That was the day’s excitement.
