The visiting got into full gear yesterday as Ash's dad, Gordie, called and suggested that we spend the day together and go to his new condo apartment. He came to get me at 11am and we drove to his place near Westmount Mall. We had a nice grilled cheese lunch with dessert and went up to his spacious apartment. Even though I had only ever operated a Mac computer once before, I managed to fix a couple of major problems he was having with printing and emails. And we got caught up on each other's news and happenings. Gord has always been a super guy and we had a great afternoon together.
We got back at 4pm just in time for me to jump in with Ash to drive to Whitecourt, 2 hours away. We stopped at Dairy Queen and grabbed burgers, fries, onion rings and drinks to munch on the way. He was going to see his Bonnyville Pontiacs (he's a scout for them) play the Whitecourt Wolverines at 7pm, already down 2-0 in games in the playoffs. I was going to visit my near-namesake Allen Bourassa (Uncle Johnny's boy) and his family who live close by. I was really fortunate to catch Uncle Maynard and his kids KaraLea and Troy, as well as Allen and his Colombian wife Martha. I showed off photos and information of our area of Andalucia before calling Cristina on WhatsApp video. Martha and Cristina nattered in Spanish for 1/2 hr as I translated for the rest. I had not seen them all for many years so it was invaluable to be brought up-to-date. Bonnyville finally scored 2 goals in the final period of the hockey game which Troy was tracking on his phone. When the game was over we opened the door, Troy was going to drive me back to the arena, and I almost barrelled right into a moose!!!!! Welcome to Canada!!
Ash drove me a mile south and a mile west of Sangudo to overnight alone at the farm of my wonderful old friend Eleanore Zotzman. Sadly I did not meet her cattle-raising husband Randy who was busy outside. But her daughter Deborah and whole family came by with Tim Horton's coffee and munchies and we had another lovely round of lively and humourous conversation. And these great folks drove me back to Edmonton with a care package of jams, pickles and a super cookbook!
So it was 2 great days of reminiscences and joy with super friends and family, and THAT is what this whole trip is about.......
I hope you enjoy the pictures. I apologize as many of the photos were taken through a dirty winter window. That was the day’s excitement.
