Friday December 13, 2024

Today we accomplished getting a normal pre-paid bus pass and used it to go the few blocks to SuperMaxi for grocery shopping.

The trek was to get the side fixings for the planned Sunday dinner party here for ourselves, Billy and Teresa, and guests Nate and Francoise.  So we got the veggies, sauces, potatoes, etc.  I also replenished our rum supply.

We caught a cab back with our grocery haul and had a quick nap in preparation for an evening get-together.

Nate and Francoise had a previous engagement so Teresa invited other friends, Ken and ?.  We had met Ken a few times here as Teresa and Billy dog-sit their dachsund and he is a kindred spirit.

We tried to find a music happening to enjoy tonight without success.  So the suggestion was made that we try a new place above us in Turi that has a viewing platform brightly lit up at night.

Kindly, Gustavo picked us up, then we picked up MaryAnn and continued on up to Turi.  The traffic was slow, aggravated by the rotating power outages.

This fancy viewing platform is solid but actually blocks the view west to the sunsets and the Cajas, ....plus they charge $3 a head to go out there to take pictures.

The attached restaurant though was very nice, called CuencaView, and had a varied menu.  I had the Filet Mignon, which passed the test.  Dawn had the Philly Cheesesteak which she found tough.  Gustavo and MaryAnn shared a monster Seafood Platter For 2, and they managed to eat almost all of it.  Gustavo had pre-ordered an appetizer platter which had a delightful array of meats, cheeses, veggies and nuts.  I correctly identified the large raisin-looking things as dried prunes, and we had laughs over that and many other topics.

Dramatic skies over mountains are very common and tonight was no exception.  For the most part, the threatening storm spared downtown Cuenca below us and allowed the usual spectacular photos.  Everyone loves Turi for these magnificent views.

So, Ken and ? were forced to decline the Sunday invitation as well, so I casually invited Gustavo and MaryAnn to join us.  MaryAnn is also a very good cook and this is stressing out Dawn unnecessarily.  I have no doubt that everything will go well.

The power had gone out near the end of our meal up there, but their generator kicked in quickly.  It began to rain upon our exit and continued most of the night.  Hopefully those rotating blackouts will soon be lifted as expected.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.
