Today they are celebrating the 24 de Mayo Independence Day holiday to give workers a long weekend. This is also the beginning of the Corpus Christi celebrations which involves buying sweets, just loaded with sugar. It is such a beautiful, mostly sunny, day for a walk.
We decided to go to El Centro to try to find the booth of our friend Gary which was supposed to be near Parque Calderon. We ran into Canadians Paul and Janet who we did know had left Cuenca, were just visiting, and their next stops are Canada and Mexico. I should have taken their picture but got busy talking...
I was about to give up on finding Gary's booth (caseta) when we saw some happening in the inner courtyard of the seminary/nunnery? next to Immaculate Conception cathedral. Inside there were merchants selling a lot of stuff other than sweets, like coffee, pitas, clothes, pickles, sauces, plants, clothing, etc. Gary was selling pitas, desserts, and chocolate mints, among other things, aided by his wife Nubia's sisters, Lola and Guadalupe. Again, I forgot to take pictures of the group... I feel so silly.
We sampled a few things and will be happily suffering for it for a while. My weakness is the coconut sweets....
I hope you enjoy the photos. That was the day's
excitement, Cheers,
Al
