Today was also Cristina's birthday, 25 years old with 22 years experience.
We had a small get-together with friends Mike & Lotis and Oswaldo, who all brought gifts even though they were told not to. The ice cream cake was delicious...
Mike and Lotis mentioned that they were going to the Cuenca Symphony presentation tonight and Cris was game so we went to Chaluabamba for pizza first so they could also attend to their dogs. The pizza place makes pizza the old-fashioned way, tossing the dough, etc., then baking it in a wood-fired clay oven. It takes no time at all to cook and it certainly was very tasty.
The Symphony was being held at the Pumapungo Theatre at Banco Central. We arrived over 45 minutes early, figuring the parking lot at the rear would be a safe bet. When we saw the lineup already out to the street we knew that we had to hustle.
The performance was of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, so the place was full. They played the first section then we had to wait for about 15 minutes while a throng of singers filed into stands behind the orchestra. I didn't count, but there were almost 100 of them. I felt really sorry for them because they just stood there while the orchestra continued for another 1/2 hour without their participation. When they did get to sing, along with 4 soloists seated in front of the orchestra, it was all in German which is my least favourite language for singing.
One fellow in front of us was fast asleep and I was not far behind. We all agreed that, all in all, it was pretty tedious and boring. The venue was lovely and it seemed that I knew every Gringo in the crowd. Anyway, it was a very good day and Cris enjoyed herself.
I hope you enjoy the photos. That was the day's excitement, Cheers, Al
