Sunday May 3, 2015
Calling up folks at the last moment to go on a Sunday jaunt rarely works so we ended up just jumping in the car and driving west.  When we were near the Turi turnoff I looked longingly to what I call "Mast Mountain", the tallest point above Cuenca where most of the telecommunication towers are.  I turned towards Turi and then decided to risk the normally awful road to reach the summit of Mast Mountain.
The road wasn't all that bad but much of it was driven very slowly in first gear.  The payoff is the unobstructed breathtaking panoramic view of Cuenca.  I don't know that I would risk it at night on my own, but the night view of the city is unparalleled.  Even the view on the opposite side is not too shabby, with a great view of the Inca terraces on the neighbouring mountain west of Turi.
Then we just followed a new strange road which went by a "Rehabilitation Center" which sure looked like a jail to me, with the watchtowers and razor wire...  I am kicking myself that I did not stop to take a photo of it.  The road ended up dumping us out at the Autopista and Doce de Octubre so I continued south to the Yanuncay river where we got out to go for a walk in the sun, which didn't last long....  Typically on Sundays the riverbanks are covered with families enjoying their sole day together.  Today was no different with one family washing a huge rug, others cooking food, one family making a private pond, and many with their pets.
When a very large dark cloud covered the sun we made it back to the car and got home as the heavens opened.  It has continued to rain here for the better part of 3 hours, and sometimes very forcefully.
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

This is a view as we climb the crummy road to Mast Mountain

There are many, many towers up here

This is the view to the northeast

This is the view north with a hugs shadow over El Centro

This is the view to the northwest and the Cajas

The sun gradually started breaking over El Centro

Another sunnier shot of El Centro

Lots of telecommunications gear up here

The backside view is not so shabby either

Did I mention there are a lot of antennas??

Along the back there seems to be an ATV playground...

Notice the Inca terraces on the mountain to the left

The Yanuncay river along Primero de Mayo is picturesque

There are some very old and deformed trees along the riverbank

Washing a huge rug in a fast flowing river is risky

The river is cleaner now so .....

Big families having a cookout

Two young men doing something....

These folks were moving rocks to make a safe private pond

A family and their dog enjoying the river

The dog was having a great time fetching things

He would go after this empty pop bottle with ease

Enjoying the lovely afternoon

Several bridges cross the Yanuncay

Enjoying the sun while it lasted

Two young boys play-fighting

Hoping for a free car wash
