Thursday Sept 27, 2018
We didn’t sleep much because we had all the dogs in the bedroom because of the fresh cement outside, plus we were clock-watching to get up by 4am to drive into Cali.
We picked up the brother-in-law Miguel at 5am because he knows Cali and he directed me all the way to the University Hospital where Cristina had a 7:45am appointment with the oncologist… or so she thought..  So far our experience with Colombian healthcare is less than stellar when it is for such an important thing.  The hospital said she had an appointment, but that it needed prior approval at another office 8 blocks away.  After talking to officials there Cristina decided, against Miguel and Adiela’s advice, not to wait ½ hour, and we came back to the hospital where she tried to get another appointment, but couldn’t, …all appointment dates were set and she would have to come back Oct 1 to try again, to maybe get an appointment in mid-November.  Welcome to third-world country public healthcare.  Cristina had a private option that will cost a bit but we won’t have to wait months more with this blasted tumor.
We went to a mall called ChipeChape (I’m thinking ship-shape, lol) and we went to McDonald’s for a hearty Big Breakfast.  Then we spotted a Bata store where Cristina saw they had some nice sandals for me for $30.  Those went on my feet immediately.
Then we went to one of the 2 PriceSmart stores in Cali at our north end.  Naturally the biggest store is at the south end, and difficult to get to.  So really, we had a meager shopping experience, just like in Pereira.  Really, I came out of there with peanut butter and grape jelly, my all-time favourite sandwich material, and not much else.
We dropped off Miguel in Tulua and he forgot his jacket and stuff in the car.  We will get it back to him tomorrow.
Then we went to the clinic where a private doctor has offered to do Cristina’s surgery.  Apparently, he has been sidelined for a month and we need to return to set up a surgery appointment Oct 8th.  It will cost us a bit of money but the peace of mind is worth it for Cristina, and myself.  There is no way that I am going into Cali again for that medical circus.
I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.
