It was indeed a sad morning as Roger called to inform us that his beloved 18-year-old pug, Fiona, passed away in his arms on the way to the vet.  The poor girl had so many problems, and was in pain, so this was a blessing,... however, losing a pet with such a history as a family member is like losing a child.

Roger wanted to borrow a shovel to bury Fiona up on the mountain but was happy when we offered to let him bury her in our yard, which we did, in the company of the many deceased pets we have back there.  RIP Fiona.

I finally spoke to a rep at Fongo and we were able to extend my Canada Calling and Texting app for the worldwide VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) for another year to 427 days.  Since this app makes me be in Canada, wherever I am in the world, I call-forward my regular phone to this service while I am away.  The number is 587-887-0488.  It works well as long as I am in wi-fi range, which is 95% of the time.  For just over $20 a year, it is an invaluable service to me.

Cristina told me that our vet, John, knew of a man in distressed condition and his family wanted to sell his farm, cheap.  But when we enquired further, the story from the family changed, as it always does in these situations.  Greed is always evident.

Our crazy Rio still chases shadows and today I took a few short videos which are spliced together here:

The look on her face when the shadow disappears into other shadows is priceless.  Then she barks loudly to try to make it reappear...  So funny!

32C in the house right now.... and I am in a pair of shorts only... with a fan on me 24-7.....  This is when I appreciate winter in Canada...

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.

Wednesday October 16, 2024

I could not fall asleep until after 1am but still got up to walk my faithful four at 5am.  It was easy to sleep after that.

Around 10am, Alex came to our door with a generic licence plate and the documents for the Pixel Electric Moped.  I am certain the delay was for him to decide on a company name "Evoltech" so he could make up his own warranty paperwork and copy stuff from a website...

Our friend Roger is in a dilemma with his 18-year-old dog, Fiona, who is failing badly, cannot see, can hardly walk, does not want to eat now, diagnosed with anemia, and has a tumor.  He feels she is in pain but is finding it very hard to make the hard decision to end her pain and celebrate her long life.  I dread those decisions too.

One of the pups that we had adopted out to an old woman is back in our care.  The old woman claims now she wanted something smaller when it is clear that this pup will likely be as big as our Rio very soon.  So, there is a better-than-even chance that this pup will bring us back to 13 dogs again.  He looks like he could be the son of Rio, and he will be likely as big, so I have named him "Grande"... (get it.. Rio Grande..) and he already responds to the name.  He is sweet, and will learn well.  Hopefully the puppy, chewy stage is almost over...

I set up outside again and it took a long time for Tom Thumb to come near the feeder but he shied away.  Then I saw a hummer further away feeding at the bougainvillea and took some shots.  Imagine my surprise when I blew up the shots to discover that this was a completely new hummer, a Black-Throated Mango... even though he probably doesn't eat mangoes...  He has two long white stripes down his body...

Cristina went to exchange some money in Tulua because the rate was decent today.

I hope you enjoy the pictures (backwards again).  That was the day’s excitement.
