It seemed like a reasonable day so we decided to make a trip to the Amaru Zoo, above the Hospital Del Rio on the Autopista.  It is not a place that you want to visit after a rain, or if it is threatening rain.  The paths are mostly dirt and they are steep, and you have to walk about 2.2 kilometers which took us about 3 hours with a drink break.
There had been much publicity about the many baby animals being born at the zoo, such as baby pumas, but we didn't actually see any on this trip.
It is a delightful, if strenuous way to spend a day.
The zoo is owned and operated by the family of my buddy Oswaldo, so I surprised him with a phone call from the exit and let him talk to his sister...  Yuk, yuk.
More photos to follow from later in the day....
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Entering Amaru Zoo, south of the Hospital Del Rio

The views get better as we climb the steep paths

Hospital Del Rio is in the lower left

They are cuchuchos...  no translation available??

cuchuchos1

Cuchuchos #2

Can anybody spare some shears for this wooly llama?

This translates to "Wasteland Wolves"

I managed to get four of them in this shot

Luckily this deer has her own enclosure

Rudimentary fencing seems to work

Lovely raptor

Another winged beauty

Hoooo.... Me?

Never got to see the Andean Condor either

Some kind of wild hog having a nap

Several others were staying out of the sun

Tourists from other countries

Lots of monkey pics... be prepared

This little guy was not shy

Cute, intelligent, and a born thief

Always hanging around to scrounge for food

Macaws keeping watch

The monkey is looking to steal some of the macaws food

Colourful fellows indeed

Posing to show off his plumage

2 other different types of colourful birds

Ruling his roost

He's got a mouthful

The monkey sneaks in when they are distracted

The thief has some goodies

Oh wait, there are humans I can sponge off of

This guy has food in his pocket and the monkey knows it

He wouldn't leave until the staff chased him away

Turtle feeding time

This gator was fast asleep in the sun too

Iguana

This turtle was trying to come down the slope and got flipped

Two turtles watching from the water

Another turtle with different body colours

OK, I don't like snakes either

As long as they are safely behind glass

They are amazing how they slither and climb

Somebody is getting a tongue-lashing

Barbarossa??

This guy always looks surprised

The monkey enclosures are large

This translates to "woolly monkeys"

Frog can blend into his surroundings

This guy almost seems normal

A different kind of woolly monkey

This guy has a permanent scowl

Monkeys on an island

This guy was too busy grooming to be bothered with us

No translation either, but they call him king of the rodents

This one followed us like a dog

He seemed really friendly, but I don't need a dog

Give a monkey some rope.....

We were treated to many performances..

This guy wanted to show off too

This is how they get from monkey house to the islands

Swinging and jumping in the eucalyptus trees

Using arms, legs and tail with equal ability to hold

Gotta love that pampas grass

He waited for us so he could pose

Then he gave us his best smile

Then a coy pose too.. What a ham

Meanwhile the other two are competing

These guys can really move....

The ocelot

These two macaws were having a noisy battle

Beak to beak fighting and squabbling

Lunch break

Ok, I got the tail in the photo...

Galapagos area had the giant tortugas and blue-footed boobies

They co-exist in the Galapagos, so why not here???

A lioness on top of the hill in the sun

Another lioness looking for lunch

Lioness and lion close together

Hmmm, I forgot something...

Oh, I remember....

but then I get sand up my nose....

White peacock

Tremendous city view on the climb down

High in the Andes
