I forgot to wish myself Happy Anniversary two days ago...  It has been 3 years since we moved to Ecuador, arriving in Quito Nov.1.2011.
The independence Day celebrations happen all over town, including a military parade down Huayna Capac which I did not attend, but did manage to get a few poor shots of the jets doing fly-by's overhead.
This afternoon I went to Parque Paraiso to catch a couple of events that sounded like they would be fun.   First were some donkey (burro) races by men in costumes, from nuns to mice....  I was actually surprised at how fast the first winner made it around that long track, then he went around again and lapped about 3 others...   I thought there was only the one race but then happened to catch a piece of a second race where the riders appeared to be all women, but in the same costumes.
Then there was a "comic futbol" game, but it was actually more like rugby with a pilates ball....  Again we had 20+ guys dressed up as women or wearing wigs and the game was highly entertaining.  One fellow could outrun everyone and the kids near me were cheering for "Padre", so he must be expert at running from the devil, lol.
There were thousands of people all over this huge park and I did encounter several expats this time.
Hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

The sound of jet engines sends me scrambling to the window

I have no idea how many jets were around, at least 3

They are too far away and too fast to get a clear shot

They look sleek and deadly

This is the closest they got, zoomed in...

After a little Photoshop enhancement....

Kids loved the burros

The burros looked bored

Everyone wants their photo taken

Thousands of people line the huge track

Riders in costume prepare to mount the donkeys

The 'nun' was entertaining the crowd

The bishop looks confident

The nun couldn't control his/her ass

Last minute checks before the race

Lined up for take-off

And off go the front-runners

These guys got lapped....

Divine intervention brings the bishop around in record time

No need for a checkered flag here

He is way ahead of the pack

Now he heads off on a victory lap, and laps the slowpokes

Second-place finisher looks very blase about it

Two more make it to the finish

The nun is still smiling

Giddy-up,... yes, you...

He wins the ugliest wig trophy

One 'futbol' team is all drag queens

The kid on the right looks a little too happy...

Good sports posing for all the photogs

It is easy to run in these big skirts

Second donkey race, and yup, that's a woman..

This gal is headed for second place.

Third place is waiting for this one

And this gal is running for fourth

This is the other "futbol" team

"Padre" is outrunning all the opponents

Getting closer to the goal

Padre kicks the ball and the Bishop makes the save...

This is definitely more fun to watch than most sports

About half the crowd is watching this fun match.
