Today was the second instalment of “La Alianza Francesa De Cuenca Presenta Tres Dias De Musica
Gratuita” or, “The Alliance Francaise Of Cuenca Presents Three Days Of Free
Music” at 33 locations, with 83 bands with 420 musicians.
My task was to cover four locations, plus anything else I could fit in.
My first stop was at La Vina for the Jim Gala Trio playing Jazz, and also Renato Albornoz who does some great Latin numbers.
Next I was to cover Karen Kennedy (an expat of 28 years) at Cafe Austria. She had two other musicians with her, a father on the keyboards and his son on the violin. The kid is only 13 years old and a sweetheart. Karen does a mix of old standbys and Latin tunes as well.
Third was supposed to be a classical pianist from the Cuenca Conservatory at the El Jardin Restaurant. Apparently he showed up 10 minutes late, played 3 whole songs and left... so I missed him. The folks at El Jardin were really pissed at this musician for taking off and costing them customers. They were in the midst of composing an email to the Alliance Francaise citing their displeasure with this fellow.
Last on my list was at the old Coffee Tree, now called Goza Espresso Bar for a Pop Rock group called Marlon Genovez and Las Malas Amistades. They drew a huge crowd on the open terrace and all the expats in attendance seemed to really enjoy them.
This is where I tagged up with another French-Canadian expat from Edmonton, Michel, and we decided to scout around and enjoy the rest of the evening. There were pyrotechnics being fired off near the big cathedral as part of the Corpus Cristi celebration happening at the same time.
Then we headed down Benigno Malo and stopped at what I think was L'Aperitivo where there was a wicked Mexican band playing on the sidewalk and the crowd was getting into the groove. The Cristiane, a belly-dancer, came out to perform, much to the delight of everyone. It was interesting to watch 3 very young girls trying to emulate the dancing.
Lastly we made a stop to meet some of the Alliance Francaise folks at El Duende where a huge crowd of young folks on the edge of the Rio Tomebamba. Michel had been here a few times before so we just hung around until about midnight before trying to find a place, unsuccessfully, on the south side to grab a bite.
