This is the day that I volunteered to take photos for the Hogar Esperanza fundraising event at the Quinta Tinajarumi on the way to Llacao. I had to forego Joes' for tonight so I had a backup photographer handle Joes and send me the photos for processing. That will be a second Blog for today.
I almost never made it to the event because Buzzer decided to get cantankerous for the second time this week and refused to electric start. That means several kickstart attempts were made before he decided to cooperate. Anyway, I did get there about the same time as the initial busloads of people were arriving. Over 200 kind-hearted people were slated to attend.
The event is to mainly support the H.E. in its efforts to assist the many people who are affected by HIV, as well as their families to cope with this major problem. Many of the stories told are heart-wrenching to say the least. There was a blind guest speaker from Loja who described his work at a Blind School there and the advances in technology that can assist them, but they need the funds to buy them. Many of the children at this school are abandoned by their parents because of their blindness. So very sad....
One young man who can't walk was brought up on stage. He had three wishes, .....to walk again, to see the ocean, and to play guitar. A guitar was presented to him at the event (a gift from the estate of a recently deceased expat lady) along with a promise that his other 2 wishes would also come true.
A delicious meal was served up by Chef Marc Dullin who hails from France. Bob Fry looked very dapper in his role as MC. My partner at OBG got tagged at the last minute to be the DJ for the event, and also to sing a couple of tunes. Hayley Marsden-Kroll and Cindy Benson closed the night by belting out some great tunes.
