Monday July 22, 2024

I was up early to run the "new" car to OK Tire 2 blocks away by 8am.  They were to do the insurance inspection (which it passed with flying colours as I expected!!) and check and refill all fluids, oil change if needed.  They called me quickly at 9:30 to discuss a few possible concerns, like rear brakes, belts, oil leaks, one bulb, etc to be expected in a car 24 years old...  I had them replace the wipers and change the air filter and picked up the car around noon.

I contacted McFarlane Agencies in Okotoks for an insurance quote and wrote up a policy with my old employers.  I figured it was better to have everything in my own name and not take chances.

So, with temporary 30-day pink card in hand, I rode the Gio to Strathcona Registry on the south side because our Oliver Square Registry always has a line-up to the door.  At Strathcona, there were only 4 people ahead of me and I was out of there quickly with my own new licence plate, bought for 20 months....

Back home, I replaced the old plate with the new one, and gave back the old registration and plate to the lovely previous owner.  I have told her that if she ever needs an emergency trip somewhere to just let me know...  I also gave $20 to the fellow who put us in contact.

Then I called my buddy KJ (Ken Johnston) at his seniors' residence in Gibbons to see if he would like a visitor or two.  He said "sure", so Bob came with me to test the car on the highway.  We did more miles than necessary because I missed a turn and had to backtrack, but the car performed as good, or better, than expected.

I was starving, in the mood to celebrate, and the image of a juicy steak was on my mind,... so we found a recommended pub and I treated the boys to supper.  It was funny how Ken and Bob told almost identical stories of their origins, broken bones, gambling, and more.  A trip to visit good friends is the main reason for buying the car, and it performed the task admirably.

I let Waze direct me home, my way, avoiding lights, and zipping right through the city way quicker than on the way out due to road construction.

I did a couple of minor repairs to the outside of the car before coming back upstairs to order Ken an air-conditioner for his suite...  Ken always has to have the same as everybody else.  I pay by credit card, they pay me cash so I almost never have to run to the bank.

Waiting for my air-conditioner to arrive, hopefully tomorrow via UPS...  My third Crappy Tire fan crapped out on me.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

But, heat notwithstanding, it was a very productive day....

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.

Sunday July 21, 2024

Before it got too bloody hot, I went out with my portable vacuum and cleaned up the interior and trunk of the car, which really didn't need much.  Then I removed all the pine needles from around the hood and the trunk.  I had an inkling that the pine needles by the windshield were blocking off the air to the heater and the AC....  I was right!  Now I have decent AC and now the car really only needs likely fluid replacement and a bulb, and I am 95% certain that it will easily pass insurance inspection.

I was so sure of that that I did up the Bill of Sale to go along with the the cash that I had gotten  direct from the bank and finalized the deal!  She agreed to keep the insurance, etc on the car until Wednesday for sure to give me time to insure and register it, probably Tuesday...

Then I went on Temu and ordered a bunch of automotive accessories like a wide mirror, a tire inflator, sun shade, steering wheel cover, tire gauge, cargo net, etc, etc.  That will be a lot less than buying a Crappy Tire.

I feel free again!

No pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.

Saturday July 20, 2024

Thursday, I went for a few groceries in the early morning to beat the heat.  And it is not forecast to get much better for another week.

The heat is oppressive and Friday the smoke from forest fires rolled in again...  So my strategy of opening the windows with fans once the temperatures equalize around midnight is negated.  I assume it is better to be warm than choking on smoke......

The 2002 Pontiac GTP that I was eyeing online got sold and I kept looking and enquiring about a few vehicles.

And I have been out of the car business for about 32 years and needed to find something, regardless of age, that was trustworthy, but cheap.  Most makes of cars have expensive parts and they are to be avoided.

Word of mouth is a great thing and someone told me that one of the residents here, a sweet old lady named Verna, wanted to maybe sell her car....  I see the car every time I look out my front window.

It is a 2000 Buick Regal LS, loaded, and surprisingly has my favourite motor, the 3.8L V6 that I had in my two Park Avenues,.. peppy and great on gas.... Together, we took it for a short test drive.  The motor sounds great and the steering is true.  Since this is a Sports model, the suspension is likely a sports suspension which is a little stiffer, but there was definitely no bounce driving over the manhole covers and potholes.  I only found 2 minor concerns, the AC is weak as is the fan blower.  And the odometer does not light up, but apparently that may be only a bulb or fuse...  It sits in the sun all day so the hood has bad paint, .. and there are a few minor rust spots, but it still looks good enough and it truly runs perfectly!!  Verna had bought it cheap, 12 years ago, from another senior, and has maintained the car well.

I made her a bit of a low-ball offer last night and today she accepted it, so we shook on it and she took the car for one last shopping trip.  I walked 2 blocks away to the OK Tire Shop that I trust and made sure that I can bring the car for an insurance inspection on Monday.  Hopefully there are no major problems like gasket failures and I will be a car owner once again...

I probably will not use it much in the city, mainly because of parking issues, but look forward to be able to get on the highway and visit friends and family again.

I sure hope that everything goes smoothly.   We hope to get it insured and registered Wednesday, or earlier.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.
