Saturday February 16/13
Back to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island in the GALAPAGOS.
Today’s photos are mostly of the Giant Tortoises (Tortugas) in the wild.  Also enjoy Lava Tubes, collapsed Lava Domes, and some Finches.

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

We came back to the centre island, then explored the middle of it

The helmof the speedboat that brought us back

The highlands of Santa Cruz are home to these big fellas

The Giant Tortoises are abundant up here

They munch on anything green

and of course move very slowly

mostly in a straight line

Males have a long tail which includes their penis

He won't win any 100 yard dashes

Lava Tube see http://trekity.com/leg-lava-tubes-galapagos-ecuador/

Lava Tube, see http://www.galapagos-islands-tourguide.com/galapagos-lava-tubes.html

Lunch is everywhere they travel

Huge Collapsed Lava Dome, see the man on the upper right

Unwanted non-endemic vegetation is taking over

This is basically the same as a volcano crater, see http://www.dijitalimaj.com/alamyDetail.aspx?img={1CDE9583-7B6B-4945-BC88-5985D98A4333}

There were two, very close together up here

The south end of a tortoise going north

Guides can tell the direction they are going by the point on their poop

They have right-of-way on the trails and roads of course

Mugging for the camera

He is a very pretty specimen

The Sony allowed me to get some good close-ups

A visiting fat Finch

Our guide was surprised that I got such good shots

Meanwhile he is still on the move

This guy posed for a bit

Another Finch joined the party

They pre-date the dinosaurs

They hiss because they expell air from their lungs when they retract

Another tasty morsel in sight

Paul McFarling, our guide, gives some size perspective

An empty tortoise shell

Great carvings for sale

This carving was huge and only $300

Great assortment of beautiful work for sale

Friday February 15/13
Still on Isla Isabela Island in the GALAPAGOS.   The scenery and wildlife had us enthralled.
Today’s photos are dominated by beach and bird shots, including Flamingoes.  3 shots belong to Marg Henshall who was using my camera with her lens.

We are still on the seahorse-shaped island

Our hotel is on the beach below the blue heart-shaped pond

Shore bird gave me a nice reflection

Gotta love the pink legs

The view from our hotel of Paradise

Coral

Broken off coral with plant attached

Colourful crab

Marine Iguana with two babies

3 Marine Iguanas

This guy is spear-fishing

Footprints

Island formed by volcanic ash

New version of lighthouse

Marine Iguana enjoying the beach

Pelican in flight, so graceful

Welcome refuge from the sun on the beach

A visit from a yellow finch

I wish I had something to feed him

A Marine Iguana interrupting my siesta

He kept coming back  to see me

A pelican a few inches off the water

Taking off from the beach

It seems like they can glide for miles, I'm jealous!

Flying so close to the water looking for lunch

A cemetery right next to the beach

Another shelter guarded by 2 Marine Iguanas

A small beach beyond a small reef

The view from this small beach is breathtaking

And yet another panorama from this spot

The view from our hotel terrace

Frigate birds criss-cross above us

They also are so very graceful

Family on the beach

My favourite shot of the day

Cropped from the next photo

Love this one too

More passes by the Frigate bird

Effortless flying

Silent beauty

Off he goes again

View from the hotel terrace

Flamingo flapping

11 flamingoes in this pond today

Moving the mud to find shrimp

Such pretty colours

Show-off

Not a common sight

They walk to calmly and gracefully

Looking for supper

Showing off again

This group stayed closest to our position

Nice stride

Love this shot

Wavy reflection

Taking off

Getting some lift

Then landing further away.  It beats walking.

Bird in a tree near our hotel.
