Thursday November 28, 2024

Today is a day I always dread, but we always manage to get through it.  I suppose because the day has a double meaning, and always will.

Christian Pena, Carlos and Cristina's only son, was found dead, poisoned, in his bed, on his 22nd Birthday, November 28, 2017.  Today he would have been 29 years old.  It is a bittersweet day, every year.

Niece Lina (Ana's  twin) joined us as we went to the cemetery mid-afternoon to celebrate Christian's birthday with decorations and cake.  Carlos and his sister Carmen joined us too.  We were even joined by Luis, the man who now looks after the cemetery because today is his Birthday too (age 55).

Storm clouds slid by without dumping on us and a bright cumulus cloud went by like a giant fist and I smiled that it was a message from Christian.

I then hoped for a magnificent sunset which didn't really happen.

Since my originally intended accomodations in Cuenca, Ecuador are under construction and apparently not suitable, I have been offered temporary accommodations with other friends.  By the time of the arrival of my niece Dawn on Dec 8 I hope to have better accommodations arranged.  I have put the word out.....

Cuenca has finally received some rain for 2 days....

Now I am told that Ana is coming to spend the night.....

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.

Roger and his little protegee Camila were at our door around 10am with a Mandarin tree for planting in front of his dog Fiona's grave.  It was my suggestion to plant a tree or bush to mark the spot and cherish the memory of 18 years with that faithful friend.  I then supplied the fencing to help protect the tree for unhindered growth.  Roger said it was the hardest work he has done in 20 years digging the grave and now, planting the tree.

For a minute, the first shot I took of Tom Thumb today had me scouring hummingbird breeds because of the white markings, but then determined that it was just a shaft of bright light that whited out the upper chest.  It is still my Tom Thumb.

Wolf and Fabiola were at the ice cream shop early and found it closed, so we rescheduled our meeting for 4pm.  Since they were on our turf I bought the ice creams.  In return, that got us an invite to their place for lunch on Friday.  Fabiola is a great cook!

They have been very good friends to me and Wolf is a bit of an inspiration.  In his 80's now, he still travels the world, often alone on his different motorcycles.  In February, he plans to fly to Montevideo, Uruguay and pick up one of his bikes left there by our friend Igor, who is now back in Thailand.  Wolf is planning on travelling to Brazil and Argentina as well on this trip.  Godspeed my good man!

Back to watching curling.....

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.
