Monday March 28, 2022

Thank you to Jill, Ash, Dawson and Danai for putting up with me for 3+ weeks.  With their help, I was able to accomplish 95% of what I had hoped to do in Edmonton.

This morning, I was awake at 2am and up at 3:30am to finish packing up and have coffee brewed for Jill & Ash to be up at 4am to get me to the airport.  While everyone still has to wear masks at the airport (good thing..)  the other protocols for Covid have all been relaxed to virtually non-existent.

The flight to Calgary for 1/2 hour in a 737 was a pleasure.  But, again, the connecting flight is way on the other side of the terminal (WHY???) and we rushed our old butt over there only to be held up from boarding because flight attendants didn't show up until1/2 before flight time so we were a tad late leaving.  Because I had had the forethought to repack my carry-on backpack to be slimmer, it did fit easily in the overhead bin of the awful, cramped Bombardier weiner turboprop.  My seatmate was as big as me, a heavy duty mechanic from Edmonton, so it wasn't the most pleasant 1.5 hour flight to Regina.

Even though I know that Saskatchewan is flat, it is still a shock to see such an expanse of prairie as far as the eye can see.

Cousin Maurice was on time to pick me up and we went to his lovely new home to chat for a bit and catch up.  At 12:30pm we were at Boston pizza to meet great cousins Mac & Elaine from Balgonie who were kind enough to make the trip in to see us.  We compared notes and funny stories for over 2.5 hours and I hated to see them go, we had so much fun.  I had forgotten that Mac's Mom was also a Jalbert, making another connection to Maurice....  Our family trees are enough to make anyone laugh.  We may get together with them again on the weekend?  I really can't believe how young all these septuagenarians look!

Ashort afternoon nap was definitely in order.

Later Maurice and I went to enjoy Donairs, even though we mixed up the orders and he got my spicy jalapeno-laden version..  He was a trooper though, and ate it all!  I am not a big fan of maple syrup, but the Canadian Maple Donair was absolutely delicious!  Thank you for ordering that, Maurice....!

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.

Sunday March 27, 2022

The day was cool and uneventful.  Today's blog is basically to warn that there may be a shortage of blogs for the next week, depending on how things go and if I will be able to set up somewhere.

I washed all my clothes early, then watched Formula 1 (my guy, Charles LeClerc came in second) and then watched Canada win bronze in curling over Sweden, then a bit of hockey, then the Gold medal curling game won by the undefeated Swiss team over Korea in a very close match.  It is so nice to be able to watch sports in English again.

No photos today either, sorry, as I have packed up mostly everything except this laptop and the camera.  Now I will shower and shave for an early 4am wake-up to head to the airport.  My phone will be shut off to conserve its poor battery life.

Here's hoping for more good service from WestJet as my check-in is complete and my boarding passes are printed.

That was the day’s excitement.

Saturday March 26, 2022

The morning had a skiff of snow and the temperatures today struggled to stay around the freezing mark.  I finished packing an extra suitcase full of my purchases and passed them on to a friend who will meet me in Calgary later.

Jill twigged me that the Bohemiam Waxwings were gathering nearby so I got a few shots through the window.  They never did come any closer unfortunately.

I watched Formula 1 qualifying (my Ferrari team is in 2nd and 3rd place for tomorrow's race) and then watched Canada's women defeat Denmark in curling.  They play again in the semi-final at 8pm against Korea....

Jill and Ash had some old gift cards for The Keg Steakhouse, so they invited me for a goodbye feast and Danai joined us.  Thank God for the gift cards because the prices were as scary as the food was good.  I can't remember the last time I had prime rib...., and the 10 oz portion was all that I could handle...  Ash struggled through a 14oz beauty.  No dessert necessary.

As we were arriving back home I got a call from my old Kurdish friend Aram who is working hard for Amazon in Kentucky on the night shift.  It is good to hear that their family is doing well and that I am invited to visit at any time....

I guess that we will be shifting the channels back and forth tonight between the Oiler game and the curling.....

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  That was the day’s excitement.
