When it rains, it pours.  Mom died yesterday and today, Brian Lyttle, the husband of my lovely sister Leonie succumbed to his respiratory illnesses.
Brian has always been a character, proudly Irish, and willing to argue with anyone over anything.  He always said that he wanted to die the best moonshiner in the world, and he certainly did make some mighty fine moonshine in his day.
Brian was one of the finest metalworkers in the world and for the last several years was making custom knives for many folks including Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.  Brian had a cameo role in the movie "The Edge" in which he supplied 5 knives for lead actor Anthony Hopkins' character.   See http://www.lyttleknives.com/
However the poor fellow was reduced to dragging around oxygen bottles 24-7 so that slowed him down a tad.
Our sincerest condolences to Leonie and the entire family.  This is certainly a hard double-whammy for all of them.

I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Today is the day that we have been dreading.  We got the call that Mom passed away at 12:05 MST.
We are so thankful that she is now at peace, and able to be with her husbands Horace and Lucien, as well as a lot of extended family and friends.
Mom has seen many, many changes in this world, having survived just shy of 100 years.
We miss you Mom.  You were always there for your children and we will cherish those memories forever.

Happy 27th Birthday to my grandson Cody.
Cristina could not go to work today because of the Carnaval holiday and no buses in our area.
I was very happy to be invited to go on a bike ride this morning by LT and Jeff.  Toxic hadn't been out in about 10 days so this sort of run would do it good.  We decided to head east and see f we could find our way to the top of El Tablon, or as I call it, Table Mountain, because that is on my bucket list.  Jeff claimed that he possibly knew a route through Ricaurte so that is the route we took.
We got lost very quickly and had to backtrack a few times.
It became obvious to us that most of the locals did not know about the mountain (very strange) or any way to get there.  Even the police were not much help.
We stopped in Ricaurte itself and, because of the weather, most Carnaval celebrations were pretty muted.  We got shot with a SuperSoaker by a young girl but that was the extent of it as far as it concerned us.  Carnaval in Ecuador consists of soaking anyone else with water, spray foam, etc.  Some vicious ones will douse you with flour as well or cover you in pig grease.
I was lucky to get some shots of a young boy and his smaller sister foaming each other, and the determined smaller girl was getting the upper hand.
A little rain shower made us take cover for 5 minutes and then we continued our quest.   After getting almost lost again we decided to call it a day.
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Sunday February 7, 2016
Friday was a very busy day, packing, returning the Bug to Gord and Em (THANK YOU so much guys!), and trying to pack in other visits before leaving the house at 4pm to begin the arduous journey home.
We met Uncle Emilian and Auntie Jeannette at Mom's apartment because they are downsizing to a new location so they were interested in taking Mom's dinette set and a few small items.  It is much more preferable to our family that someone else in the family gets good use of items from Mom's rather than strangers.
My last visit with Mom was pretty anticlimactic.  I am pretty sure that she understood my goodbye but she kept drifting off to sleep so that is the way we left her, peacefully sleeping.
THANK YOU again to Fern & Eileen for putting up with me for 8 days.  I did my best to stay out of their way so they could continue with their normal daily operations without worrying about me.  Having my own transportation certainly made things easier.
We had an electronic bathroom scale to weigh the suitcase lent to my by Fern & Eileen so that I could bring back some necessities, mostly from Costco.  The scale said 49.3 lbs and the WestJet scale said 49.3.  I did not weigh my carry-on, which was an oversight, and WestJet insisted on weighing it, so I was apprehensive of course.  The scale said 20.0, bang on the allowance, so I gave myself credit for superlative packing..  It is a good thing that they did not weigh my fanny pack...!!!
The 3 hour flight to Los Angeles was uneventful and I read a book most of the way.  Since I was staring at a 12-hour layover, I was not looking forward to that, again saved by the book and catnaps.
LAX is under renovation, I know, but jeepers, do we really have to step outside to go from the ticket counter on the main floor, walk a block to an escalator to get to the security area, then go up another floor to the Departure area.....   really???  And the only real amenity available was a Starbucks that closed shortly after midnight??!!   They also only have the row seating with armrests to discourage anyone from stretching out and actually getting some decent rest.
Then the Avianca people had told me at 9pm that I could check-in at 5am, so I was first in line, but, of course, they did not open until 6am....   I spent the night away from everyone in the baggage area.
The 7 hour flight to Bogota was the hardest because of much turbulence (again) over Mexico, even though we were flying at over 40,000 feet, and we could not walk around to even go to the bathroom.  Avianca offers decent drink options, including free alcohol, but their meals leave a lot to be desired.
The Bogota airport at least had a lot of amenities available for the 3-hour layover but our gate was a main floor exit onto buses and then climbing the steps onto a visibly aged and dirty Airbus.   Mercifully the last leg was only 2 hours to Guayaquil and we had a quick breeze through Immigration but then I got pulled over for another inspection.   I asked the guy why we would possibly need an inspection in each of the 4 airports???  Overkill to say the least.
I caught a cab the short distance to the Bus Depot and went in the wrong entrance which disoriented me from finding the ticket counter for the Cuenca buses.  The heat and humidity, combined with my fleece pullover, and hauling the suitcase and carry-on had me dripping wet in no time.
I climbed the escalators to the bus departure gate 87 as instructed and put my bags below and presented my ticket to board.  The man said that I should be on the bus in gate 86, so I had to retrieve my bags and repeat the procedure on the new bus.  If you have ever seen the movie "Airplane" where the main character is sweating like Niagara Falls, then you will have an idea how I felt....  Then several people were seated in the wrong seats and it took ages to seat everyone properly before we finally departed...  It was an unbearable time until the bus got in motion and we could get some cool air circulating.
Then, I am still figuring out how, or why, the bus made its way to Azogues before coming to Cuenca....
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to arrive home shortly after 6:30am and to be met by an appreciative reception from Cristina, Lupe and Mariposa.   So essentially my odyssey was 36.5 hours and I survived, stinky but unscathed, and deliriously happy to be at home.
Carnaval is beginning so the neighbourhood is very quiet for a Sunday as everyone with the capability leaves town during this period.   You have to be in the right mood and frame-of-mind to venture out on the streets, knowing that you can get soaked, foamed, and even covered in flour.
I hope you enjoy the photos, again taken with the baby camera, so apologies for the quality.  It will be nice to have the big camera in my hands again.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

My sister Yvette and her husband flew back to Ontario this morning (safely), to be replaced by our brother Norm from our hometown in Saskatchewan.
Us three brothers, me, Fern and Norm went to visit Mom over lunchtime and she ate her soup and dessert, as usual, along with a healthy dose of Ensure.
All was going well until we were preparing to leave and Mom decided that she wanted her shoes, her white sweater (the blue one wouldn't do), and her coat.  I guess that she wanted to come with us and became a little agitated, which is apparently normal for her in the mid-afternoon.  I prefer to be non-confrontational in most things, and this sort of episode is upsetting.  I can't imagine the frustration that our poor Mother feels.  Hopefully things will be good for my last day visiting her tomorrow before I begin my horrible trek back to Ecuador.
Again, I am so thankful to have such great family and friends for support.   Hugs to everyone.

I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Wednesday February 3, 2016
The owl down the street seemed to be AWOL for a couple of days but he was back today, firmly ensconced high in the branches of the big fir tree.   It is really difficult to get a decent shot of him because I am shooting with my tiny camera from almost directly below through the tangle of branches.
The weather has been amazing while I am here and I have not had to scrape any frost, snow, or ice from the windows of the Bug.
I did a little excursion to Costco to take advantage of my brother's membership and to stock up on some needed items like pants, vitamins, Hy's Seasoning Salt, steak spice, etc....   I tried to find some spices that Joseph wanted for Joe's Secret Garden but unfortunately they were not in stock.
We all went to see Mom at various times this afternoon and she was a little more anxious and agitated today, always playing with her nightie and the bedding.  We got her in a comfortable position for sleeping and let her rest for a while after she had been really good at eating a good portion of her lunch.
There was very little that I could understand when she spoke so I find that quite frustrating that I can't properly respond to her wishes.  Trying to figure out what language she is using, French or English, is hard at first, and by then I have missed what she is saying in that very soft voice.  And because she can't wear her teeth anymore because of her shrunken gums, it only adds to the mumbling.
Mom has always, always had her hair coiffed, so it is a shock to see her with straight hair simply combed back.  Add to this the loss of the teeth and I was hard-pressed to even recognize her the first time.  But she is still our loving Mom, who still worries about her children.
We heard from 2 more of our brothers who are coming shortly to see Mom, one tomorrow (so I will get to see him) and the other next week.
Mom seems a little more determined to hang on for a while but I still don't regret my decision to come now to see her.  At this age, she could be gone at any time.
I hope you enjoy the photos despite the poor quality.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Tuesday February 2, 2016
Cristina put in an order from Ecuador via Facebook that she wanted me to get her a specific style of racerback tank top.  With the very kind help of my sister Yvette I only had to go to 2 stores to get the right sized garment.  Then I went to Chinook Shopping Center and purchased two other plain versions.
Then it was a quick visit to Mom who seems much more chipper of late and she has actually been eating quite well.  I left her in the capable hands of Yvette and Lou when I rushed to do some visiting and keeping appointments in Okotoks.
Later we heard from our sister-in-law Eileen that Mom said that she is not ready to go yet, so who knows,... she just may celebrate her 100th birthday in less than 4 months!!
Traveling south of Calgary is always a treat with the farm country backed by the glorious Rockies bathed in snow.  Gosh I miss this area.
My first stop in Okotoks was to visit my delightful old neighbour, Janet.  When I had called her I had been unaware that her husband Ted had passed away last August peacefully at age 90.   Apparently my old house next door has been re-sold to a single lady who is making some changes, like a new front door with glass.
Then I caught Theresa at Okotoks Glass followed by many of my co-workers at McFarlane Agencies.  It is always so nice to see so many familiar faces.
My banker was ready to see me early so I bit the bullet and converted almost all the money in my account.  It isn't much but that almost 50% bite to convert to US dollars really hurts.   I took out enough, I hope, for a quick shopping trip at Costco tomorrow.
Leaving the parking lot, I was waiting to turn out onto the street and was putting on my seatbelt when this Peace Officer rolls by, makes a u-turn, waits for me to turn, then follows me and gives a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt!  Apparently a parking lot is considered a highway, and only Officer L. Hornby (and she is no Twiggy) would be dumb enough to believe that.   So, essentially I got a $155 ticket for not wearing a seatbelt while stationary in a parking lot.   It will be a frosty day in hell before I will pay that ticket Miss Twiggy.
Next I made a few changes with my financial advisor before heading over to Original Joe's for wing night.  I started this group back in 2005 and people come and go, but everybody stops in on Tuesdays when they are in town.  $4 for a pound of wings and I am a happy camper, opting for 3 orders tonight.  I had called a few folks and they came out to join us, so we had quite a group of 16 people attending.  Thank you to everyone who came out.
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al
