I forced myself to go out tonight to see a Rock Symphony at the gorgeous Remigio Tamariz theater at the University.  They were having a rock band play with the University Symphony (including our friend Janet Kavanagh).
I don't know why I expected to hear solely English rock music, and they did play a few tunes like The Wall, and Let It Be, but the Ecuadorian hard rock was really quite uninteresting.  The lead singer had a great voice, but the whole rock band had very little stage presence unfortunately.  The nicely-dressed symphony orchestra was lost in the background of heavy smoke effects while we were treated to an overly loud lead guitar and the singer walking around like a strutting rooster in a t-shirt, stretchy pants and ugly black tennis shoes.
It made for interesting photography challenges but I just couldn't stay until the end.
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

The lovely Remigio Tamariz Theater is always a pleasure to visit

As usual, the gringos arrive early

The University Orchestra began by playing Pink Floyd's "The Wall"

The rock band's lead singer had a great voice

Lots of smoke and light obscured the Orchestra

"Let It Be" was one of the few rock classics they played

A good crowd on hand, but not quite a full house

Blond Janet Kavanagh on the viola

The singer was the poorest dressed in the house

The smoke was overpowering throughout the concert

I caught this cool shadow on the side wall of the lead guitarist

Lots of Ecuadorian rock tunes

Smoke-free for a second or two

All in all, it was worth the visit

Singing a love song

Lots of emotion in this love song

Probably my favourite shot, so I had to play with it...

Version #2

Version #3

OK, that's enough of the smoke and mirror thing....

My friends, Dot & Kathy have rented this huge house up near the Mirador De Turi which has magnificent views and tons of space.   The feeling of being so high up, with a great sense of the open sky above, is simply breathtaking.
I can't wait for the housewarming party....
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

This enormous home includes a lot of acreage in a gated community

This is just part of the city view........

The formal dining room has awesome views

A kitchen with a dishwasher is every woman's dream

It has an upstairs social area as well

Yesterday we did a stop at the Quinta Bolivar, signed in and went in to discover that there are no displays until April because they are doing renovations everywhere.   Gee, the security guard could have told us that right away....
Today, a little road trip was in order so we headed over to Mount Cojitambo.  Somehow I missed the turnoff from the town and decided we didn't feel like hiking about a kilometer uphill so we continued on towards Azogues.
Well I missed the turn there too so we just kept on to Biblian to check out their church built into the mountaintop.  Everything was closed so the two interior shots were taken through broken windows (no, I didn't break them... sheesh).  We did discover a gate open that allowed us up the mountaintop behind the church so we managed to get some lovely panoramic views from above the spire.
It seems that, every time I come to Biblian, it is afternoon and the rains are coming in...  Today was no exception, so we hopped back in the car and headed back to Azogues.
The rains followed us and we barely got inside the church when the heavens opened.  After diddling about inside we started the trek back to the car and ducked into an open doorway only to find a little chapel to the Virgin mary along with a lot of candles afire, and Holy Water available from 3 faucets....
Water, water everywhere as we came back to Cuenca in a torrential downpour.  Judging by the water running down my street, I am sure there is going to be some flooded areas somewhere in town....
I hope you enjoy the photos.  That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

My friend Cristina enjoying a laugh

Getting ready to pose = a better candid shot

The Quinta Bolivar Museum

A few photos remain in the center courtyard during renovations

I never noticed this plaque before saying Simon Bolivar stayed here Sept 16/1822

Climbing the steep roads to the Biblian church

The church is built into the mountaintop

Day or night, this church can be seen for miles

Yes, I missed a turn again and went past it

Cute statue in a natural grotto

Hard to beat a mountaintop view

The blue spire is hard to miss

Going up the path behind the church leads to an antenna

This is my kind of view

You can see the weather making its way across the valley

This is as high as I wanted to climb

On the way back down, a differently composed shot

Looking down into the upper chapel

Looking south towards Mount Cojitambo

These creepy bugs seemed to be everwhere

A sneak peek at the chapel built into the mountain rock

A look up the face, catching the bells

The church at Azogues is also up high

It is impressive day or night as well

The altar is nice, the wooden roof panels lovely

A nice little side altar

The main altar is very golden (gold leaf?)

This little chapel area is to the right

Many candles were burnt down all the way, with reflections

Maybe I was a firebug in a past life...

I liked the reflections in the melted wax

Many worshippers stop by here and ask for intercessions from the Virgin
